Client evacuations from South Sudan update

21 December 2013 ,  —

London

Experts from International SOS and Control Risks are continuing to provide extensive advice and assistance to around 90 organisations with operations in South Sudan.

An incident management team is on the ground in the capital Juba with support staff operating from Kampala, Uganda and Nairobi, Kenya. They are supplying regular, real-time intelligence updates to assistance centres in Dubai and Johannesburg. Since 16 December, 24 travel security alerts have either been published through our dedicated website or sent out directly to members.

The International SOS and Control Risks alliance brings together the extensive global network and expertise of both companies. International SOS is the world’s leading medical and travel security risk services group. Control Risks is the world’s leading global risk consultancy firm.

Advice and assistance on air and land evacuations has been provided to around 350 people since 16 December. Many are working for large, multinational organisations while others are individuals or families. In one evacuation more than 80 people were transported to Uganda in a single aircraft. More such movements are likely in the coming days and form part of the comprehensive support service being offered to travellers, expatriates and their dependents.

This high level of assistance follows advice that clients should evacuate non-essential staff. Detailed and regularly updated travel security updates are available on our Travel Security Online website, but general guidance follows:

• Continue to defer all travel to South Sudan. Sporadic outbursts of violence are likely in Juba. The situation outside the capital remains highly fluid.

• Any confirmed outbound flights cannot be guaranteed, personnel should depart from South Sudan.

• Overland movement remains difficult. Personnel should move only with a secure escort, along cleared routes, and under strict movement control procedures.

• Personnel remaining in South Sudan, including Juba, should remain in a secure location, with access to essential supplies and a robust and resilient local assistance network. If such support cannot be guaranteed, personnel should depart from South Sudan.
