Global mobility is a significant feature of many organisations today. While this creates new opportunities, it also increases the health, safety and security risks to those who travel overseas for work.

The International SOS Foundation, together with leading international health, safety and security experts, today announced the completion of the world’s first international framework to protect workers travelling or on overseas assignment.

The global framework provides strategic guidance for organisations to identify risks, prevent incidents, and ensuring the safety, health and security of these workers.
It leads the organisation through setting up and integrating a travel safety, health and security policy into its existing policy structure.

“The goal is to help organisations achieve sustainable improvements in their occupational safety, health and security outcomes,” said Dr Janet Asherson, Adviser – Environment, Safety and Health for the International Organisation for Employers. ”To do this, the document outlines practical measures that the organisation can take before, during and after its workers travel abroad, to be able to respond to incidents as rapidly and effectively as possible.”

Through implementing this global framework, organisations can deliver measures which will go beyond keeping workers healthy, safe and productive.

“A sound occupational health, safety and security management strategy is key to maintaining business competitiveness,” said Er. Ho Siong Hin, Commissioner for Workplace Safety and Health, Ministry of Manpower, Singapore. “It will reduce costly disruptions, and have a positive impact on organisational sustainability, productivity, reputation, and corporate social responsibility. A good safety, health and security management strategy gives employees assurance and peace of mind that their wellbeing is taken care of, as they go about their work.”

About International SOS Foundation

Established in 2011, the International SOS Foundation ― Ambassadors for Duty of Care www.internationalsosfoundation.org – has the goal of improving the safety, security, health and welfare of people working abroad or on remote assignments through the study, understanding and mitigation of potential risks. The escalation of globalisation has enabled more individuals to work across borders and in unfamiliar environments; exposure to risks which can impact personal health, security and safety increases along with travel.

The Foundation is a registered charity and was started with a grant from International SOS. It is a fully independent, non-profit organisation.
