Hurricane Matthew Information & Advice

Advice and information accurate as of 11:40 EST.

International SOS and Control Risks continue to monitor Hurricane Matthew. The hurricane has passed Jamaica, Haiti, Cuba, and the Bahamas, and is on trajectory to impact the south-eastern coastline of the United States over the next few days. Strong winds, heavy rainfall and associated disruption to airport operations should be anticipated in coastal areas of Florida and potentially Georgia, South Carolina and North Carolina.

Advice for travellers

  • United States: defer non-essential travel to coastal areas of Florida, Georgia, South Carolina and North Carolina likely to be affected by severe weather conditions in the coming days. Follow all directives issued by emergency personnel.
  • Bahamas: defer travel until international airports resume operations.
  • Cuba: defer non-essential travel to the eastern provinces of Las Tunas, Granma, Holguin, Santiago de Cuba and Guantanamo until further notice. Travel to other parts of the island, including Havana, can resume with flexible itineraries.
  • Haiti: defer non-essential travel to Haiti. Members on essential travel should ensure they have access to food, water, shelter and telecommunications.
  • Ensure any travel planned is in line with your own internal corporate guidelines.

Advice for members in hurricane-affected locations
  • Shelter in a safe place during the approach and passage of the storm. Follow all directives issued by emergency services personnel.
  • There is a high threat of flooding from storm surges in low-lying coastal areas in the south-east of the United States during the passage of the hurricane. Avoid rivers and other bodies of water, which are susceptible to flooding. Secure boats and property.
  • Roads in coastal and low-lying areas of Haiti, the Bahamas and eastern Cuba may be blocked by flooding. Reconfirm the feasibility of journeys before setting out, taking care to avoid surge-prone or flooded areas.
  • Essential services such as electricity may be disrupted due to infrastructure damage caused by the storm's passage. Charge all communication devices and keep extra batteries for back-up.
  • Monitor the US National Hurricane Center (NHC) website for up-to-date information and hurricane-related warnings and be prepared to respond accordingly.
