International SOS launches Air Pollution website in wake of China smog

19 December 2013 ,  —

International SOS is providing advice and information to clients following the recent increase in air pollution in some of China’s cities.

Air pollution across the world can cause adverse effects on humans and the environment. Some air pollutants are man-made and others are naturally occurring. The World Health Organisation estimates that over 2 million deaths are caused by air pollution each year.

Dr Gordon Peters, Medical Director North Asia, International SOS said:

“Our operations have again noted an increase in calls for assistance and information, with very poor air quality in Beijing and Shanghai in 2013.

We have issued medical alerts and conducted proactive client outreach with face-to-face sessions and webinars. Our information and advice is compiled from our doctors in affected areas, as well as from the latest research, government and international health authority publications.”

A number of cities and countries are routinely affected by very poor air quality. Many clients are asking for information and guidance on how they should respond and how they can assist their employees. International SOS’ ‘Air Pollution’ website provides reliable  information on air pollution and how it is measured, health effects, precautions to take, and city and country information and is available to members 24/7.

This follows the launch of other International SOS dedicated medical websites. Subjects covered include SARs, the Boxing Day Tsunami, H5N1 and H7N9 ‘Avian Flu’, H1N1 ‘Swine Flu’, Middle East Respiratory Syndrome, Coronavirus, the Japanese Tsunami and Nuclear Disasters, and Typhoon Haiyan.
