International SOS to Advise Travel Managers on Duty of Care Health and Security Considerations

International SOS, the world's leading medical and security assistance company, will host four education sessions between Tuesday, September 11 and Wednesday, September 12 during the ASIS International 58th Annual Seminar and Exhibits Convention, which takes place September 10-13 in Philadelphia.
The first session on Duty of Care obligations will be hosted by Suzanne Garber, Chief Networking Officer, International SOS, who will be joined by Jason Dury, International Security Manager for SAIC; Edward Levy, Security Consultant; and Robert Martin, Director of Corporate Security for Shire Pharmaceuticals. Alex Puig, Regional Security Director, Americas, International SOS and Control Risks; and Robert Quigley, M.D., D.Phil, Professor of Surgery, Medical Director, Americas, International SOS will host the second session on travel to BRIC countries. Puig will be joined by Pablo Weisz, Regional Security Manager, Americas Region, International SOS and Control Risks during Wednesday's third session on the risks facing business travelers to Mexico. The final session will be led by John Rendeiro, Vice President, Security and Intelligence, International SOS on understanding the criteria used for threat analysis to effectively prepare travelers and expatriates, with industry expertise from Craig DeCampli, Director, Global Security, KPMG.
Duty Of Care: What's The Security Director's Role? Tuesday, September 11, 2012, 1:45 to 3:00 p.m., Pennsylvania Convention Center, Room 103-A
Many savvy security executives have played a critical role in creating security risk management plans. Gray areas can still exist, however, even in a well-crafted plan. What is Duty of Care? What are its responsibilities? How does duty of loyalty apply? These legal terms must be defined and incorporated into preventative strategies before critical situations arise. The Duty of Care and Travel Risk Management Global Benchmarking Study showing how organizations worldwide are responding, Garber will facilitate the discussion surrounding what organizations around the world are doing to meet their Duty of Care obligations and how to identify potential gaps in travel safety preparation. Dury, Levy, and Martin will share details of the study along with best practices and examples of how they protect employees and how the security director role is critical to the success of their employers.

Organizations seeking to take advantage of promising economic climates in these regions continue to send U.S.-based employees abroad to manage projects and establish new operations there. As with all travel to an unfamiliar environment, living and working abroad in BRIC countries presents a specific set of healthcare and security challenges to organizations and their people. During this intermediate level session, Puig and Quigley will outline the steps travel managers can take to effectively assess and manage threats, protect their people, and increase their department's value to their organization.
Decoding Mexico: Understanding the Risks Facing Business Travelers Wednesday, September 12, 2012, 1:45 to 2:45 p.m., Pennsylvania Convention Center, Room 105-B
Respondents to a recent Duty of Care and Travel Risk Management Global Benchmarking Study ranked Mexico as the most dangerous place to do business, ahead of countries in the Middle East and North Africa. Travel security experts Weisz and Puig will distinguish between the real versus perceived threats facing travelers to Mexico, providing an in depth analysis of the situation on the ground, and discuss how companies who continue to operate in Mexico are addressing drug violence and other issues. The top security risks to travelers going to Mexico will be examined, as well as proactive plans and policies that can be implemented within your organization.
Security Threat Intelligence: Evaluation and Response Wednesday, September 12, 2012, 1:45 to 2:45 p.m., Pennsylvania Convention Center, Room 201-C
This intermediate level session will examine the process of analyzing and responding to security threat information related to terrorism, civil unrest, crime, and other events. Rendeiro will lead the evaluation portion, which will detail the criteria used by intelligence analysts in government and private sectors to evaluate threats and make decisions regarding dissemination of threat information. On the response side, Rendeiro will dissect the practical implications of releasing threat-based information to the general public will be examined, as well as use of such information by law enforcement and security professionals. DeCampli will share industry expertise and discuss best practices.
